Human Rights

Human Rights education, awareness and action is the focus of Idealists United’s work, but what do we mean when we say Human Rights?  The term Human Rights is sometimes misrepresented and more often than not, many people can’t define Human Rights and very few people know what our Human Rights are. This is a prime example of why the work that Idealists United does is so important. Here we provide you with various resources and documents to learn more about what exactly Human Rights are and why they are so important.

So What are Human Rights?

Human Rights are those rights which we are all entitled to simply because we are human. They are the most basic rights we need to be provided with in order to live a life of dignity. They are universal, this means that everyone, everywhere, has the same basic rights no matter what he or she looks like or believes.  They are indivisible and interdependent; in other words, Human Rights complement one another.  Since they work together to create a full and dignified life for individuals, violating one right often leads to the violation of other rights as well.  Therefore all rights need to be respected and protected equally.

To define specific Human Rights, Idealists United refers to the International Bill of Human Rights, a collection of the three pieces of international Human Rights law (the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights).
